Context: 2024

This meeting takes place at a time when Cape Town has been selected as the host city for the International Astronomical Union‘s General Assembly in 2024. This will be the first time in the 100 year history of the IAU that this major international event will be held on the African continent. In preparation for this event, the African Astronomy community needs to get organised, and this meeting on Astronomy in Africa, and the re-establishment of an African Astronomical Society, provides an opportunity to do so.

Once the bid decision was announced in August 2018, a Vision 2024 document was produced. This is meant to be a living document meant to capture the continent’s ambitions and thus guide preparations towards 2024.
